What We Did Today
Students completed Problem 1.3. Students discovered that the median is the middle position of any set of data that is in order from least to greatest. Students added data to existing sets of data to see if the position and/or value of the median changed. We worked through A and B in class. Answers to the classwork is available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-6-plus-homework-and-answers.
Focus Question
How do you identify and use the median? How can you compare two distributions of data using the medians?
Homework
No homework.

What We Did Today:
Students reviewed concepts from 1.1 and 1.2. Students worked on ACE questions 1 – 8, 15 – 18, and 24 - 28, starting on page 19 in their "Data About Us" books. Students also worked on the following vocabulary words:
attribute
distribution
frequency table
line plot
cluster
gap
mode
minimum value
maximum value
range
The online glossary, as well as audio links for each word, are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-6-plus-homework-and-answers
Homework:
Students turned in what they had done at the end of class. There is no homework.

What We Did Today:
Students completed Problem 1.2. Students created dot plots and compared three sets of data using their ranges and their modes. Students also described the distribution of data using clusters and gaps. Class notes are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-6-plus-homework-and-answers
Focus Question:
What are the measures of central tendency and variability (or spread)? How do you compare and use mode and range?
Homework
None.

What We Did Today:
Students continued to work on Problem 1.1. Students further analyzed and compared name lengths of Chinese names and US names using their frequency tables. Students then made line plots of the data. The notes are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-6-plus-homework-and-answers.
Focus Question:
What are "data"? How do you represent data using a frequency table or a line plot? How can you compare two distributions of data?
Homework:
None.
LaFramboise - Individuals & Societies - 11/14/2016
We continued exploring maps to investigate natural hazards/disasters, and to attempt to answer the question of how the basketball got from Japan to Alaska.
